Breaking Off False Labels: Reclaim the Truth of Who God Made You

You know that voice — the one that whispers you’re not enough, you’re too much, you’ll never change. Those aren’t just passing thoughts. They’re labels. And if we’ve been wearing them long enough, they start to feel like identity.

But friend, they are lies. And today, we’re going to learn how to take them off for good.

Where Do False Labels Come From?

False labels don’t appear out of nowhere. They come from painful experiences, words spoken over us by people who should have known better, failures we’ve never fully forgiven ourselves for, and seasons where we couldn’t see God working. Over time, we stop questioning them — we just start living inside them.

Maybe your label says unworthy. Maybe it says damaged, too broken to be used by God, or the one who always messes up. Maybe it was given to you as a child and you’ve carried it every single day since.

Here’s what I want you to know: those labels were never yours to carry.

God’s Word Has a Different Name for You

The enemy is intentional about the labels he places on us because he knows that identity shapes destiny. If he can get you to believe a lie about who you are, he can keep you from walking in what God has called you to do.

But Scripture is just as intentional. In Ephesians 2:10 (NIV), God says this: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

You are His handiwork — His masterpiece. Not a mistake. Not too far gone. Not the sum of your worst moments. You were created on purpose, for a purpose.

How to Identify the Lies

Before you can break off a false label, you have to name it. This takes courage, but it’s worth it. Here’s a simple exercise: when a negative thought about yourself shows up, ask — Is this what God says about me, or is this what my pain is saying?

Truth is always consistent with Scripture. Lies are always consistent with shame.

If the thought condemns, diminishes, or isolates you — it’s not from God. Romans 8:1 (NIV) is clear: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Full stop.

Renounce the Label Out Loud

There is real spiritual power in speaking truth with your voice. This isn’t a motivational trick — it’s rooted in the same pattern we see throughout Scripture. God spoke creation into existence. Jesus declared truth when tempted in the wilderness. We are made in His image, and our words carry weight.

Try this: find a quiet moment and say out loud, “I renounce the lie that I am [fill in your label]. That is not what God says about me. I am chosen, loved, and called according to His purpose.”

Then fill that empty space with truth. Write it on a sticky note. Put it on your mirror. Say it until your heart starts to believe what your mouth is speaking.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

One of my deepest passions is helping women get free from the lies that have kept them small. That’s exactly what we dig into on this week’s episode of the Fostering Faith Podcast — Breaking Off False Labels. We walk through how to identify the specific lies the enemy has planted in your story, how to renounce them with biblical authority, and how to replace them with the rock-solid truth of what God says about you.

This episode isn’t just teaching — it’s ministry. I believe God has someone listening today who needs to hear every single word.
