Freedom From Fear: Overcoming Anxiety and Trusting God’s Promises

What if I told you that “do not fear” appears in Scripture hundreds of times? Friend, that’s not a coincidence — that’s a loving Father who knows exactly how our hearts work. As we kick off Freedom Month on the podcast, we’re starting with the thing that steals more peace than almost anything else: fear and anxiety.

Fear Is a Liar with a Megaphone

Anxiety has a way of taking a “what if” and turning it into a “what is.” It borrows trouble from tomorrow and charges you interest today. Jesus asked, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27, NIV). The answer is no — but worry can absolutely steal the hour you’re in. Fear doesn’t just make you feel bad; it shrinks your world, keeps you from obedience, and talks you out of the very things God is calling you into.

God’s Promises Are Stronger Than Your What-Ifs

Here’s the anchor verse for this week: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV). Notice God doesn’t say “do not fear, because nothing hard will ever happen.” He says “do not fear, for I AM WITH YOU.” The promise isn’t a problem-free life — the promise is His presence in every problem.

Trade Your Worry for Prayer

Paul gives us the actual exchange rate: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, NIV). Every anxious thought is an invitation to pray. Not a polished prayer — a real one. “God, I’m scared about this. I’m handing it to You. Thank You that You’re already there.” Do that enough times and worry starts losing its grip.

Practical Ways to Fight Fear This Week

Start your morning with truth before your phone — one promise of God before one headline. Speak Scripture out loud when anxiety spikes; David did it: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3, NIV). Move your body, get sunlight, drink your water — you are a whole person, and caring for your body is part of caring for your mind. Tell a trusted friend what you’re carrying; fear grows in the dark and shrinks in the light. And hear me on this: if anxiety is heavy and constant, reaching out to a doctor or counselor is not a lack of faith — God works through wise help, too.

Your Challenge This Week

Write down your top three “what ifs.” Next to each one, write a promise of God that answers it. Then pray through that list every morning this week. You’re not pretending the fear isn’t there — you’re reminding your heart Who is bigger than it.

Friend, God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Fear may knock on the door this week, but you get to decide who answers.
