Built to Last: Community and a Faith That Holds Through Trials

Have you ever watched a storm roll through and wondered which houses on the block would still be standing when it passed? Trials have a way of showing us what we have really built our lives on, and that is exactly what we talked about in our final bonus episode of the ROOTED series.

Trials Reveal the Foundation

Here is something I have learned the hard way: the storm does not create your foundation, it exposes it. When life is calm, almost any kind of faith can look strong. It is when the diagnosis comes, the plans fall apart, or the prayer goes unanswered longer than we hoped that we find out what we are actually standing on.

Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV): the wise builder's house did not fall, "because it had its foundation on the rock." Notice that the rain still came. The wise builder was not spared the storm. The house simply held. That is the kind of faith I want, and I know you want it too.

Faith Was Never Meant to Be Lived Alone

I will be honest with you, friend. Some of my hardest seasons got harder because I tried to carry them by myself. I put on a smile, kept busy, and told myself I was fine. But God never designed us to hold up under pressure on our own.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) encourages us to consider how we can spur one another on toward love and good deeds, and not to give up meeting together. Community is not an extra on top of your faith. It is one of the main ways God holds you steady. The friend who prays with you, the sister who texts you a verse at just the right moment, the church family who shows up with dinner: that is the hand of God, wearing skin.

Perseverance Is Built Slowly

Nobody becomes steady overnight. Perseverance is built in small, ordinary choices: opening your Bible when you do not feel like it, praying when the words will not come, showing up for the people God has put in your life. James 1:2-4 (NIV) tells us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance, and perseverance finishes its work so that we may be mature and complete.

I think about this on my long runs. Nobody finishes a marathon on adrenaline. You finish it by taking the next step, and then the next, with people cheering you on and running beside you. Faith is the same way.

Questions to Sit With This Week

Grab your coffee, find a quiet spot, and ask the Lord to show you three things. First, what am I building my life on right now? Second, who are the people God has placed around me, and am I letting them in? Third, what is one small, faithful step I can take today to stay steady? You do not have to have it all figured out. You just have to take the next step with Jesus and with His people.

If this spoke to you, I would love for you to hear the whole conversation. Listen to Built to Last: Community, Trials, and a Faith That Holds on the Fostering Faith Podcast, available on Apple Podcasts and wherever you listen. And if you know someone walking through a storm right now, send this to them. Sometimes a friend and a reminder are exactly what we need.

You are held, you are loved, and you are built for more than you think. Until next time, keep your eyes on Jesus and your feet on the Rock.

With love and a warm cup of coffee,
Tracie
