Can’t Hear God’s Voice? How to Discern His Direction in Uncertainty
Have you ever been standing at a crossroads, begging God for a clear answer, and heard nothing but silence? Maybe it's a job decision, a ministry opportunity, or a hard conversation you keep putting off. If you're in that season right now, friend, this one is for you.
The Silence Isn't a Stop Sign
I've been there, coffee in hand, journal open, asking God to just show me the next step. And when the answer doesn't come right away, it's tempting to assume I've missed something or that God has stepped back. But silence is not the same as absence. In this week's episode of the Fostering Faith Podcast, we talk about holding on to what you already know when you can't hear what you want to know.
Elijah and the Gentle Whisper
In 1 Kings 19, Elijah is exhausted and discouraged, and he runs to the mountain at Horeb looking for God. There's a powerful wind, then an earthquake, then a fire. But the Lord wasn't in any of them. After the fire came "a gentle whisper" (1 Kings 19:12, NIV). God often isn't found in the loudest, most dramatic moment. Sometimes He meets us in the quiet, and sometimes we have to get still enough to notice Him.
Anxiety, Pressure, and Preference Can Sound Like God
Here's the real talk: not every loud thought is the voice of God. Anxiety can sound urgent. Pressure from other people can sound spiritual. And our own preferences can show up dressed in churchy language. Part of discernment is learning to ask honest questions. Does this line up with Scripture? Is it producing peace and fruit, or panic and fear? Do wise, godly people who know me see it the same way? God's direction will never contradict His Word, so start there.
Ask for Wisdom, Then Keep Walking
James 1:5 (NIV) says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Notice that He gives generously and without finding fault. You're not bothering Him. So ask, and then keep being faithful with what is in front of you today. Keep praying, keep showing up, keep loving your people, and keep staying in the Word. Faithfulness in the small, known things is often the road that leads to clarity about the big ones.
A Few Ways to Hold On This Week
Spend ten quiet minutes with no phone and no agenda, just you and the Lord. Write down what you know to be true about God's character, because that doesn't change even when your circumstances feel unclear. Then take the next faithful step you can see, even if it's a small one. You don't need the whole map to take the next step with Jesus.
And if the waiting is wearing on you, please don't walk through it alone. Text a trusted friend, call your mentor, or bring it to your small group and let someone pray with you. Some of my sweetest moments of clarity have come after a conversation with a godly friend who reminded me of what God had already spoken. Community is one of the ways He steadies us when our own hearts feel shaky, and you were never meant to carry this season by yourself.
Friend, I'm praying for you as you wait. God has not forgotten you, and He is not hiding from you. He is faithful, even when the room is quiet. I'm cheering you on from my kitchen table, probably with a second cup of coffee.
