The Next Faithful Yes: Trusting God One Step at a Time
Have you ever begged God for the whole map, only to feel Him hand you a single flashlight instead? I have. I wanted the five-year plan. He gave me the next step. And honestly? That used to frustrate me until I realized the flashlight was the mercy all along.
That’s exactly what we’re digging into on this week’s episode of the Fostering Faith Podcast, “The Next Faithful Yes: Obedience in Ordinary Life,” episode four in our ROOTED: A Faith That Holds series. If you’ve been waiting on God to reveal the entire road before you’ll take the next step, friend, this one is for you.
Grace Is the Root, Obedience Is the Fruit
Let’s clear something up first, because I know how easily this gets tangled. Obedience is not how we earn God’s love or buy our way into salvation. Scripture is clear: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-10, NIV). We are saved by grace alone. But that same passage doesn’t stop there. It says we are “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Grace is the root. Obedience is simply the fruit that grows out of a heart that’s already been rescued.
God Gives Light for the Next Step, Not the Whole Road
One of my favorite verses in all of Scripture is Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (NIV). Notice it doesn’t say floodlight for the whole highway. It says lamp for my feet. God rarely hands us the ten-year plan. He hands us today’s step, and then He asks us to trust Him enough to take it. That’s not Him withholding information out of cruelty. That’s Him inviting us into a relationship where we actually need Him tomorrow too.
Why Delayed Obedience Costs More Than We Think
Here’s something I unpack more on the podcast this week: delayed obedience isn’t neutral. It quietly shapes our hearts even when we think we’re just “waiting for clarity.” Small choices, the ones nobody else sees, are actually building either spiritual integrity or spiritual drift. Jesus put it plainly: “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15, NIV). Love and obedience aren’t two separate categories in the Christian life. They’re woven together. And the beautiful thing is, our obedience isn’t a performance for God. It’s simply how love shows up with its shoes on.
When You Miss It, Grace Meets You There Too
Maybe you’re reading this and thinking about the faithful yes you didn’t say. The door you let close because you were scared, tired, or just didn’t trust God enough in that moment. Can I remind you of something? “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, NIV). Failure isn’t the end of your story with obedience. It’s an invitation to come back to grace and take the next step from right where you are, no shame required.
Your Next Faithful Yes
So here’s my question for you this week, the same one I ask myself in the episode: what is the next faithful yes God has already put in front of you? It might not be dramatic. It might be a phone call you’ve been avoiding, a boundary you need to set, a habit you need to start or stop, or simply opening your Bible tomorrow morning before you open your phone. You don’t need the whole plan. You just need to take the step you can see.
I’d love for you to listen to the full episode this week, because I go deeper into what it looks like to recover after a season of disobedience, how to tell the difference between God’s commands and our own preferences, and how to actually identify your next faithful yes instead of just talking about it.
